The Last Sonnet
After reading the book, World War Z, I thought about if I would survive that world.

The website for the book has a survey on the Calucate the Risk section of the site.

My chances of survival are 32%.

Feel free to discuss the book or your survival ideas in this scenario.

I read that book a while ago but lent it to a friend and he still hasn't returned it FROWN.GIF. I got a 42%!

Also, I heard that they are making a movie from the book.
The Last Sonnet
I personally think a mini-series would work better, but that is just me.
Kiro-San
Never read it but definately wan't to pick it up. Got 38% on the test. Did a fake one to try and get a high score and only managed to get 52% though.
Chaoxytal
18% for me.

It honestly felt like every single one of my answers were either the worst possible answer or very close to it. Don't watch or read the news, no experience with firearms, poor physical condition, traveling alone, etc. The only thing I didn't get were the relocation questions since I didn't know what or where many of those places were, whether they would be beneficial or detrimental to the situation, etc.

33% for me. If I was living where I had been about 6 years ago, I probably could have managed a little better. But I'll settle with a 1/3 chance. I've had worse odds. XD

Having read the book helped with some of the decisions on where to 'flee'. Definitely one of my favorite books though. lol
Super Lucyjin
I got 31%, but had to improvise for a couple of questions because they were only orientated to the US. lurk.gif
MT
Got 42% answering honestly, but using some of the knowledge I gained from reading the book.
oochie
29%

150%

It doesn't count if you're immune. >:|
Reverend Sharp
43%. My housing is likely a huge detriment to my survival (basement apartment in a low-income urban area), but it made me glad that I've just amassed a bunch of otherwise useless skills (krav maga, recreational boating, cycling, hunting, etc).

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!

So like... you walk down the street knowing you could defeat everyone with the flick of your finger?
MT
You mean you don't?
Anelle
33% =O Although I think if I immediately banded with some nearby friends it would be much, much higher >>
Chaoxytal
Krav Maga isn't going to do jack shit against scratching/slashing/biting zombies attacking in a swarm. tongue.gif

You're pretty much screwed if you have to resort to hand to hand combat since even if your strikes connect you run the risk of getting infected, especially if you're punching them in the face (mouth/teeth). Kickboxing would probably be the ideal martial art, if any. Longer range + shoes covering flesh, etc.
Ghostfire
Unless you run out of shoes.
KuraiKaze
I got a 28% chance of survival... higher than expected. Since my first reaction will probably be to shoot myself in the head. I am fucking terrified of zombies.
Keres
I was thinking about this in the shower this morning, and I realized how actually screwed I would be. I mean, I would go north (because zombies operate less effectively there, according to World War Z and the Zombie Zurvival Guide) but to get north...I would take I-95, which would be immediatly blocked. I think my best bet would be to go west into west virginia and then go north from there, but I realized I would have a very hard time given that between me and canada is Baltimore, Philly, Pittsburgh and New York, depending on how I decided to go. Urban Centers=mass zombies=bad times. I think I would be in a lot of trouble. Although I do know how to sail, so maybe that would be better. Just race to the shore and steal a boat. I guess I would do that, then. Ugh, I don't think that I would do well.
Gobeta
Oddly I got 39% being a student, yet my brother, who is fully all-terrain surival trained and is active military, only got 30% despite most of his other answers being prtty much the same. Also what does it mean when it asks if ur hosue is above the snow line? o_O and where would be the best geographical equivalent of England? lol

I ave a feeling he dies easier coz hes got a kid and wife and thus would probably try to travel by car, where as I bike/horsed it with a few mates
Mera'din
Yeah it's probably mostly the car thing. Cause you aren't getting anywhere in a car most likely. lol
Other than that, it might factor in certain things that happened in the book as far as military training vs. zombie attack. Because you can't combat zombies like you combat people.

As far as the house being above the snow line, I had assumed that it means that if it snows where you live during the winter, will your house still be visible/accessible in the circumstance of nobody clearing away said snow during the winter. EVER (ie: would it stay above the level of the snow). If so this is a good thing because zombies are freezable. lol

I think a nice chunk of my score came from that fact. Cause the place I live at right now sits up on a hill and would be easily defensible.
Chaoxytal
You should get a bonus amount of percentage points for every Resident Evil game you've beaten.

+5% for each of the traditional RE games (RE2, RE3, RE0, Outbreak, etc), +3% for each of the newer RE games (RE4 and RE5), and +1% for the FPS RE games (Dead Aim, Chronicles, etc).
Mera'din
lol@static scenario rail shooters.
Chaoxytal
Which is exactly why they only get a one percent increase. tongue.gif
garlic
51%, changing the American-only questions to best fit the UK. I also told a few half-truths (I'd say having complete access (keys etc) to my Grandfather's yacht, which is about 1 hour away, counts as owning it).
Slyph
Low thirties.

My original zombie survival plan is fucking ruined now. My idea was to bust into the local sea cadet building, which had a few .22's, was surrounded on all sides by barbed wire and fencing, and had a comrades' bar. But it's closed down.

Now i'd probably just stay in my apartment, which is virtually inaccessable (I have to throw coins at the window to have Chelle open the gates and doors to let me in. I can't even just walk up to the front door) though completely devoid of weaponry save a hammer and low on food. If it got desperate I could try prying a hole in the floor or climbing down my balcony to get to the bookies below, which, being a bookies, would be pretty secure from groaners, and then bust a tunnel to get to the chinese next door to the bookies. We'd die of heart attacks before we died of starvation that way. We've also got a bicycle, which is stated as good by Zombie Survival Guide standards since it's low noise, although that perhaps makes me think different of making all that noise busting from bookies' to chippy. I'd just have to eat Chelle I suppose.
Chaoxytal
And then consume her body for food.

lol innuendo
WantonGroove
33%, I imagine my chances would improve if I had more experience with firearms and had more people. But it sounds reasonable. I'd probably give myself that much chance of survival

My new plan, after reading several zombie books/comics this month, is to make my way north, towards Inveraray/Argyll region (where my granda has a yacht, and if that is broke, several people have several yachts). Other advantages include the cold climate and the lack of a dense population. Also a lot of tools, petrol, food, essentials there as opposed to junk like video games, electronics, crap.

If the outbreak is only getting worse by the time I arrive (90 minutes in a good day, 7 hours in traffic jams), then I simply commadeer a vessel, preferably a couple, and wait for any family to arrive. Ideally, as well as all my friends and family, I would really need my cousin (who is fully qualified to sail anywhere in the world on any boat, yet hasn't even begun his driving lessons), my uncle (who can fix any engine put in front of him), and my grandad (who is a wealth of knowledge, including mechanics, electronics, engineering, carpentry, plumbing, map reading and navigation) and obviously my fiancée.

After waiting out a few days/weeks (depending on severity of situation and practicality of idling in the water - ie can the zombies swim/float?), we make way to Canada (perhaps stopping in Portugal or a Scandanavian country to survey the damage done to Europe before making such a long and treacherous trip). If Canada is, as I suspect, a stronghold against the undead, perfect. Make port there, share with the locals but do not become too entrenched in their lives. If bad shit goes down, I want to be out of there quickly without too much of an emotional anchor forcing me to make dangerous and possibly lethal mistakes trying to save their lives.

If Canada fails, then it will be a case of sailling south, stopping at various parts of the coast to collect provisions etc but never for too long. After a long, adventurous journey, we arrive in Alaska. If the people there have survived and are willing to take us in, perfect. If not, then we simply fish out some crab for the rest of our years, perhaps making occassional journeys to the American cost/Asia to trade, and hope for the best.

There are a lot of points in this plan where all could fail and we all die - but at least it is more fun than holing up in some department store and waiting for the zombies to break down the door. Plus, if Canada and/or Alaska and/or the Scandanavian countries do prevail, we can contribute to the recreation of society in the post-undead world, rather than looking out for number one.
