Review:
Star Wars: Tales From The Empire, edited by Peter Schweighofer and authored by many, collects together nine short stories and a novella written two of the more popular names in Star Wars Expanded Universe fiction, Zahn and Stackpole. The name “Tales From The Empire” would indicate that the stories would feature the Imperial point of view from Imperial characters, but really, most of the stories just happen to involve Imperials rather than focus on them. Fans of the Thrawn Trilogy and the X-Wing series are in for a treat, as a number of the short stories and the novella feature characters from those respective series. The novella in particular involves an intricate plot that brings together the Rebels, Imperials and CorSec Security officers to take on a Black Sun stronghold. This story also feels the most like it is a “Tale From The Empire.” Most of the remaining stories involve some kind of Rebel versus Imperial conflict, with a story involving a medic being the best of the short stories. The book provides some action and Expanded Universe content, but Star Wars: Tales From The Empire lacks Imperial-based stories and the multiple genres that makes Cantina and Jabba’s Palace so interesting, leaving it as an average collection.
